At breakfast, a white porcelain round plate holds fried eggs and toast, as sunlight filters through the glass, casting a glow on the golden-rimmed patterns along its edge. At a dinner party, an irregular black pottery plate carries delicate cold dishes, creating a rhythm of interlaced light and shadow with crystal cups. We encounter plates every day, yet rarely notice how they become the finishing touch of table aesthetics.
Definition: A plate refers to a shallow-bottomed utensil for holding items, larger than a dish and mostly round.
Origin: Dating back to the foraging era, people used broad leaves like banana, lotus, or lotus root leaves as containers. To prevent food from rolling off, they wove a circular frame with branches or vines and placed the leaves inside, forming the earliest prototype of plates.
Plastic plates: Made of PP, PE, etc., lightweight and unbreakable, suitable for outdoor use or children. However, they have poor heat resistance and may release harmful substances.
Ceramic plates: Mainly used at home, hard, non-deformable, and heat-retaining, but heavy, fragile, and low-quality ones may contain harmful heavy metals.
Metal plates: Including stainless steel, aluminum, tin, tinplate, etc. Stainless steel plates are durable, easy to clean, and heat-resistant but may react with food; aluminum plates are light and conductive but soft; tin plates are aesthetic and corrosion-resistant but costly; tinplate plates feature a tin-plated iron surface for decoration and durability.
Glass plates: Transparent, easy to clean, and ideal for showcasing food colors. They are heat-resistant for microwave use but fragile.
Wooden plates: Usually for serving meals, made of natural wood, exuding a rustic charm. They require moisture and pest control.
Round plates: The most common, suitable for various foods in daily use.
Square plates: Ideal for large foods like grilled meat, adding a modern touch to the table.
Irregular plates: Shapes like hearts or fans, perfect for special occasions to enhance fun.
Dining plates: Essential for serving food, available in various sizes and materials.
Fruit plates: With a wide, shallow design for easy access to snacks.
Baking trays: Large and heat-resistant, used for baking bread or cakes.
Ornamental plates: Exquisitely crafted for display, with high artistic and collection value.
Practical use: Holds dishes, soup, salad, etc., collects food scraps, and facilitates selection in buffets.
Decorative role: Adorns walls or cabinets, and elevates the aesthetic of meals at banquets.
The existence of plates is like a metaphor for life: whether a rustic earthenware plate or a luxurious silver one, they all cycle through being filled and emptied. Perhaps the most touching moment of a plate is not when it’s laden with delicacies, but when it lies clean and dry in the cupboard, waiting calmly for the next encounter.
